Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Marty Newton played in the minor leagues in the mid-1980s.

He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 3rd round of the 1985 MLB January Draft-Regular Phase, a couple picks after outfielder Greg Briley, but opted not to sign. He did ink a contract after being taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2nd round of the 1985 June Draft-Secondary Phase.

He hit .355/.474/.452 with six RBI in 17 games for the GCL Dodgers in 1985. He joined the San Francisco Giants organization for 1986 and hit .237/.326/.322 in 34 games for the Everett Giants. Overall, he batted .262/.358/.349 in 51 games.

He died on July 30, 2014 at 49 years old.
