Biographical Information[edit]

Marty Honan played only six games in the majors but was in the press quite a bit because he was first wanted for the Players League, and then, when the Players League folded, was fought over by other teams. In both 1890 and 1891, he played for the Chicago Colts under manager Cap Anson. In 1894, Sporting Life mentioned that he had previously played indoor baseball (but did not specify when).

By 1893, he was a town clerk.

"Honan is as good a catcher as any team wants. He was signed by the Brotherhood for this year, but is now on the market." - Sporting Life, January 31, 1891

"Martin Honan, City League catcher, signed a personal agreement last fall with Secretary Bruneil to play wherever the latter dictated. The consideration was $100, and he was grabbed by the Players' League because it was known Anson wanted the promising lad. Honan has been offered terms in the Western Association. Today he sought advice at headquarters. As a result Honan will ignore his personal agreement." - a "Chicago dispatch" in Sporting Life, February 28, 1891

"Minneapolis has started contract-breaking, having signed Honan, the Chicago catcher under contract to Cincinnati." - Sporting Life, March 7, 1891
