Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman Mark Vientos was drafted by the New York Mets in the 2nd round of the 2017 amateur draft, out of high school. It took him a few years to justify his prospect status, but he was invited to take part in the 2022 Futures Game at Dodger Stadium as part of the National League team. He played that season with the Syracuse Mets of the AAA International League, where he .280/.358/.519 in 101 games, with 24 homers and 72 RBIs. The previous season, 2021, he had an even better slugging percentage between Syracuse and the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies, at .581, thanks to 25 homers in 83 games.

He made his major league debut on September 11, 2022 with the Mets in a neck-and-neck race with the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. He started at DH and hit 8th against the Miami Marlins in his first game, going 0 for 5 with a pair of strikeouts and stranding six baserunners. It did not matter too much, however, as the Mets won handily, 9-3. He hit just .167 in 16 games in his first taste of the majors and did not appear in the postseason. In 2023, the Mets regressed but he got to play 65 games at the major league level, although his production was still underwhelming, with a .211 average, 9 homers, 22 RBIs and an OPS+ of 70. He shared time at third base with Brett Baty, another youngster and in the minors hit .306 with 16 homers in 61 games for Syracuse. He was back with Syracuse to start 2024, and hit .285 with 6 homers in 31 games there before being called back to New York as Baty was struggling at the plate. His insertion into the starting line-up coincided with New York starting to play much better, and after 34 games on June 25th, he was hitting .297 with 9 homers and 20 RBIs. That day, he homered twice off none other than Gerrit Cole to lead the Mets to a 9-7 win over the New York Yankees.
