Biographical Information

Mark Tracy is the grandson of Jim Tracy Sr., the son of Jim Tracy and the brother of Brian Tracy and Chad Tracy. He hit .326 as a high school junior and .351 as a senior and also played football. In 2007, he hit .289/~.341/.368 as a freshman at Pepperdine. He transferred to Duquesne and batted .295/~.371/.404 as a sophomore in 2008. As a junior, Mark hit .250/.325/.515 with 14 homers and 46 RBI in 52 games. He was picked by the Colorado Rockies in the 49th round of the 2009 amateur draft, the 9th Duquesne player ever drafted. He got the last out in a Duquesne home game. He hit .290/.382/.500 with a team-high 12 homers as a senior, driving in 45 in 56 contests. The Rockies took him in the 22nd round of the 2010 amateur draft. As Duquesne eliminated baseball after the 2010 season, he was the final draftee ever from the school. He was a catcher in amateur ranks, but was moved off the position as a professional, given his large frame which is not condusive to crouching repeatedly behind the plate.

Tracy made his pro debut with the Tri-City Dust Devils on June 19, 2010, going two for four with a run. In his first season, he hit .209/.286/.308 in 58 games, with 4 homers and 22 RBI. He struck out in 67 of 201 at-bats. He was 9th in the Northwest League in strikeouts. His .988 fielding percentage led NWL first basemen. In 2011, he moved up to the Asheville Tourists in the South Atlantic League, where he hit .256/.304/.421 as a first baseman. He slugged 20 doubles and 9 homers and drove in 54 runs in 79 games. His K rate remained very high, with 120 in 297 AB. In 2012, he was promoted to the High A California League, with the Modesto Nuts. There, he hit .264/.310/.448 in only 163 at-bats and 41 games, getting a bit of playing time at first base and at designated hitter. After his father handed in his resignation as Rockies manager at the end of the season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for a player with a similar profile, Kenny Williams Jr., son of former White Sox GM Kenny Williams, whose career had stalled at AA. Williams had also recently given up his job, although he still held a senior title in Chicago's organization.
