Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Huismann graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in business and finance. In 1989, in 11 1/3 innings pitched with the Baltimore Orioles, he struck out 13 batters while walking none. That is the highest number of strikeouts recorded in a season by a pitcher who did not issue a walk. It did not do him much good, as he still put up an ERA of 6.35 that year.
Bill James famously pointed out that Huismann was a puzzle, because just about all pitchers who have a great K/W ratio, as he always had, experience success in the majors. It was not the case for him, however, as he could never establish himself at the major league level. In his best season, in 1986, he went a combined 3-4, 3.79 with 5 saves in 46 games between the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners. He established highs for games, innings pitched (97 1/3), saves and strikeouts (72) that season, but was back pitching in the minors and moving from team to team the next year.
Notable Achievements[edit]
