Biographical Information[edit]
Mario Diaz recorded the last putout in a classic New York Mets game on July 25, 1990. The Mets almost blew a 10-3 lead in the 9th inning. The tying run was on third base with two outs when Tom Herr hit a bullet to shortstop Diaz. After a frustrating inning of seeing-eye line drives, bloop hits and infield dribblers, the final out prompted announcer Bob Murphy to exclaim, "Line drive! It's caught! It's over! They win! The Mets win the ballgame! They win the damn thing by a score of 10 to 9!"
Mario's nickname is "Puruco".
