Biographical Information[edit]

Mario Álvarez has pitched as high as AA.

Álvarez was signed by scouts Pablo Peguero and Ezequiel Sepulveda for the Los Angeles Dodgers in January 2003. He made his pro debut in 2004 with the DSL Dodgers 2, going 4-3 with a 1.24 ERA. He tied Julio Pinto for 10th in the Dominican Summer League in ERA. Coming to the US in 2005, he struggled with the Ogden Raptors at 3-3, 6.14. He led the Pioneer League with 12 hit batsmen. In 2006, he was 7-10 with a 5.89 ERA and Columbus Catfish, giving up a .303 average. He gave up 84 earned runs, most in the South Atlantic League.

Mario was 7-10 again in 2007, this time with the Inland Empire 66ers, where he had a 5.60 ERA. The right-hander was 1-5 with a 7.08 ERA for the 2008 Jacksonville Suns before injury ended his season. He had elbow surgery in December. In 2009, he returned with Inland Empire (5-6, Sv, 4.48) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (0-1, 3 R in 3 IP). With the 2010 Lookouts, he had a 6-6, 4.94 record and two saves. He allowed a .319 batting average. He was third in the Southern League with 156 hits allowed.

Álvarez joined the Dominican national team for the 2010 Pan American Games and Baseball World Cup Qualification Tournament.
