Mariano Casaldi
Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher-outfielder Mariano Casaldi won six titles with Nettuno in the 1950s. [1] Stats are not available online for Italian baseball prior to 1956 (as of 5/24/23); from 1956-1971, he was 18-2 with a 2.27 ERA and hit .204/.305/.350. [2] He was the first starting pitcher for the Italian national team in an international tournament, taking the hill in the 1954 European Championship opener against Belgium. He allowed three hits, one walk and no runs in 5 2/3 IP while fanning 8 to beat Vital Verbert; Carlo Tagliaboschi succeeded him. He was also 1 for 2. [3] He sat out their game 2 win over Spain to become Europe's first champs as Giulio Glorioso and Tagliaboschi were the hurlers. He also was with Italy for the 1955 European Championship. [4]
