Biographical Information[edit]
Marcus Greene was originally drafted as a catcher, first by the Florida Marlins in the 39th round of the 2012 amateur draft out of high school, and again by the Texas Rangers in the 16th round of the 2013 draft out of junior college. The scout was Doug Banks.
He began his pro career with the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League in 2013, hitting .227/.367/.335 in 58 games. In 2014, he began the season with Spokane then was promoted to the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League in August. In 55 games between the two stops, he hit .289/.425/.422, although he hit much better at Spokane (.318) than at the higher level (.179). He began 2015 at Hickory and was hitting .218 after 25 games when his season ended in June when he had to undergo Tommy John surgery. This left some doubt about whether he would be able to continue as a catcher upon his return to action. In spite of this uncertainty, he was traded to the San Diego Padres on August 18th, along with a player to be named, in return for big league outfielder Will Venable.
