Biographical Information[edit]

Makoto Fujiwara pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

Fujiwara represented Japan in the 1967 Asian Championship. The Nankai Hawks drafted him in the first round of the 1967 NPB draft, but he refused to signed. The Yakult Atoms drafted him in the first round of the 1969 NPB draft.[1] Fujiwara entered the rotation as a rookie, and went 9-8 with a 4.63 ERA. His ERA improved to 3.31 in 1970, but he collected 10 losses due to the weak offense of the Swallows. What's worse, he had a conflict with his manager Osamu Mihara, and he requested a trade after the 1971 season. The Atoms then traded him to the Toei Flyers for Mitsugu Tanaka.[2]

Fujiwara was 7-13 with a 4.41 ERA, and pitched a career-high 42 games in the first season with the Flyers. His ERA rose to 6.33 in 1973, but he bounced back soon. He had a 3.91 ERA in 27 relief outings in 1974. The Hyogo native came back to the rotation in 1975, and had a record of 2-7 with a 3.63 ERA. He only played 11 games with a 4.82 ERA in 1976, then announced his retirement after this season.

Overall, Fujiwara was 23-48 with a 4.21 ERA and pitched 577 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
