Hillis appeared in one game with the 1924 Yankees, coming up from the Atlanta Crackers. In 1925-26, he was involved in a two-part trade that sent Tony Lazzeri to the Yankee organization. Hillis was sent to the Salt Lake City Bees.
He was with the Toledo Mud Hens also in 1925.
He briefly managed the Cambridge Cantabs in the 1934 Northeastern League, where the team had a 1-12 record. On July 17, the team moved to Wayland, MA and had an 18-30 record for the rest of the season, finishing 8th in the 8-team league..
