Biographical Information[edit]

Carlson played both baseball and basketball in college. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 16th round of the 1990 amateur draft, one round after they took Rick White. Carlson was 4-1 with a 4.02 ERA as a rookie for the Welland Pirates. He struck out 55 in 53 2/3 innings and allowed just 32 hits, but was wild, walking 52. He tied for the team lead in wins but was surprisingly was only third in walks. The tall right-hander split 1991 between the Salem Buccaneers (1-1, 3.67), Augusta Pirates (5-4, 2.44) and Charleston Rainbows (1-1, 4.07). The stint with Charleston came following a trade to the San Diego Padres for Brian Dorsett. He walked 65 in 125 innings, struck out 109 and allowed 95 hits.

Returning to college, Carlson completed his degree. He later became a professor and head baseball coach for his alma mater.
