Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Guzmán has played in the minors and for the Dominican national team.

He was signed by San Diego Padres scout Israel Rojas in February 2015. [1] He had a rough pro debut for the 2015 DSL Padres, hitting .144/.331/.160 and fielded .892 at short with more errors (25) than hits (20). He did draw 34 walks in 41 games. In 2016, he improved to .302/.444/.353 while fielding .959 at SS and .944 at 2B.

In 2017, he batted .236/.346/.324 for the DSL Padres, now playing mostly third, where he fielded .952. He split 2018 between the AZL Padres (.262/.375/.308 in 29 G) and Lake Elsinore Storm (6 for 40, 2 2B, 3B, 7 BB). He had hit .228/.365/.289 in 192 games in the minors, with 109 walks. He had fielded .905 in 82 games at short, .942 in 59 at 3B and .964 in 57 at 2B.

Luis was 2 for 9 with a walk, HBP and run for the Dominican Republic in the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup. [2] When the Dominicans won Gold in the 2022 Bolivarian Games, he was an excellent 6-for-9 with a double, hit-by-pitch, four runs and a RBI, handling 13 chances error-free at 2B, splitting the position with Ricardo Andújar. Despite his part-time role, he tied for 5th in the Games in hits and tied Luis Espinal for the best average (neither qualified; Stanley Javier led qualifiers). [3]
