Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Loren Gross played in the minor leagues in 1990 and 1991 after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 28th round of the 1990 amateur draft out of Hutchinson Community College.

His first professional season was in 1990 with the Idaho Falls Braves of the Pioneer League, where he hit .330/.371/.462 in 53 games as the team's starting forst baseman. He made the news on August 21st, but not for his hitting: that day, Idaho Falls suffered an embarrassing 28-0 loss at the hands of the Helena Brewers, one of the most lopsided scores in recent minor league history. He was the most effective pitcher for his team, in his only professional pitching appearance, closing the game with 1 1/3 scoreless inning and also recording a strikeout. In 1991, he played 66 games at Idaho Falls, hitting .298 and 43 for the Macon Braves of the South Atlantic League. It seems that the parent Braves assigned him to the higher-level Macon team following his solid inaugural season, but he failed to hit there, batting .219 with 3 homers and 19 RBIs, and was sent back to Idaho Falls as a result, where he did better in what was a circuit very favorable to hitters at the time. His combined line was .270/.330/.428 with 13 homers and 75 RBIs in 109 games. He also played some third base that season.

He did not return in 1992. He remained active in baseball after his professional career, coaching American Legion Baseball and as an assistant coach at Skutt Catholic High School in his native Omaha, NE.
