Longview Cherokees

From BR Bullpen

The Longview Cherokees joined the Big State League in 1952. They were managed by Clem Hausmann until June 14th and H. Louie Fitzgerald thereafter, going 71-76 and finishing 7th in the eight-team league, but 42 games ahead of the last-place Waco Pirates. Hausmann (6-5, 3.79) was also their most effective pitcher. OF Wes Gibson hit .377/~.433/.680 and 5 players hit 17 or more homers to give the team 162 long balls, tying for the league lead. The top slugger was C Mike Dooley, who hit 35 homers and batted .277/~.377/.570 with 117 runs and 117 RBI.

The next season the city started out without a team became host to the Longview Pirates when Waco was forced to relocate after its ballpark was destroyed by a hurricane in May.
