Lexington Braves

From BR Bullpen

As of 2006, the last professional baseball club from Lexington, NC was the Lexington Braves. Formerly the Lexington (NC) Giants, the team changed affiliations and names in its last year, 1967. Attendance was strong (49,012), second in the six-team league, though they were last in the first half (24-34) and next-to-last overall (55-63) under Buddy Hicks. They were outscored 736-661, allowing the most runs in the league. Joe Berg (13-7, 3.69) led the staff, while they had two All-Star position players, 1B Paul Dennebaum (.311/~.429/.521, a league-leading 83 RB, two behind the leader with 16 home runs and tied for the lead with 27 doubles) and C Walt Czopczyc (.309/~.456/.418, 74 BB in 90 G). The top offensive performer, though, was SS Udell Chambers (.325/~.456/.501), who was third in the Western Carolinas League in average, possibly first in OBP, tied with Dennebaum for the double lead and first in walks (80) and times hit by pitch (9), while stealing 28 in 30 tries. Gastonia's Dave Cash beat him out for the All-Star spot at short.
