Biographical Information[edit]

Right-hander Lew Carpenter, a 29-year-old knuckleballer, pitched in four major league games in a nine-day period for the Washington Senators in early May 1943. Lew did not allow any runs, and only one hit, but he did allow 4 walks in his 3 1/3 innings. Carpenter spent a total of eight seasons (1938-1945) in professional baseball, spending the rest of his career in the minor leagues. To Lew's credit, only two of his seasons were spent in Class B ball and the rest of his pitching was done in Class A or better. In his eight-year career, he put together six seasons with double digit victories. His best year came in 1945 when he was 22-2 with a 1.82 ERA while pitching 208 innings for the pennant winning Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association. His 22 wins and 1.82 ERA led the league. He died at 65 on April 25, 1979, at his home in Marietta, GA.
