Biographical Information[edit]

Lionel "Leo" Smith played the last part of the 1890 season in the majors, appearing in 35 games with the Rochester Broncos of the American Association. He appeared exclusively at shortstop. The regular shortstop that year for the team was Marr Phillips, who appeared in 64 games. Phillips, who was 33 years old, appeared no more in the majors after that season but played many more years in the minors. Rochester did not field a team the following year in the American Association.

Leo, who was born and died in Brooklyn, NY, had previously played many years in New Jersey, with at least two years for the Trenton Trentonians and five for the Newark Little Giants (also known by other names in that period) before he came to the majors at age 31. After his major league days, he played in the minors through 1897.

"Short stop Smith and pitcher Miller, of Newark, have joined the (Rochester) team and have done good work. Smith is a lively player and covers a considerable amount of ground, and has made a very favorable impression." - Sporting Life, September 6, 1890 issue
