Biographical Information

Len Gilmore pitched more than a decade in the minors and appeared in one game in the major leagues.

The only major league pitcher to come out of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Gilmore began his pro career with the Refugio Oilers of the Texas Valley League in 1938. After winning 21 games for the Albany Senators in 1944, he made his only big league appearance with the Pittsburgh Pirates on the final day of that season. Starting the second game of an October 1st doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies, he went the distance, allowing 7 earned runs over 8 innings and taking the loss. After his big league stint, he pitched for several teams in the minors, including the Oakland Oaks, and played until 1952.

Following his baseball days, Gilmore became a firefighter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and retired in 1970 with a rank of captain. He died there in 2011.
