Biographical Information[edit]
Lefty Bertrand pitched one game in the major leagues, on April 15, 1936 for the Philadelphia Phillies. Pretzel Pezzullo also pitched that day, in his only game of the year and the last game of his career, although he had pitched several games the previous year. Without Bertrand and Pezzullo the rest of the year, the Phillies lost 100 games.
Lefty never batted in the major leagues, but in the minors he was both a pitcher and an outfielder. In 1935 in the Northern League, he went 16-5 for the Winnipeg Maroons, and also hit .279 with 9 home runs. He had played in college starting in 1928 and as late as 1935.
