Biographical Information[edit]

" . . .a man of more than ordinary literary attainment. He is also a finished artist at the easel, and a musician of no mean ability. He reads Dickens, Thackeray and Bulwer almost constantly during the week." - from A Fine-Looking Lot of Ball-Tossers, quoting a Louisville newspaper

Leech Maskrey spent almost his entire major league career playing for Louisville, usually in left field.

"Leech" was his middle name.

He made his debut at age 28, and much later that same 1882 season his younger brother Harry Maskrey joined the Louisville team for one game.

His obituary mentioned him playing for Louisville and Chicago, and also managing teams in Milwaukee, Portland, and elsewhere, including a team in England for a year (his time in England is described in the book What about the Villa?: Forgotten figures from Britain's pro baseball league of 1890). After baseball he engaged in business in Ohio and then Pennsylvania. He was "one of the best-known residents" of Mercer at the time of his death. Source: Samuel Leech Maskrey obituary

The book A Fine-Looking Lot of Ball-Tossers has several pages about Maskrey, saying that he played for Akron, Milwaukee, and Des Moines, and also managed Atlanta and Warren. He came from a prominent family in Mercer and married a woman who was also from a prominent family. He and his brother Harry managed hotels after their baseball days.
