Biographical Information

Lazaro Abreu is a former minor league baseball player who appeared in only four games in his professional career. He was drafted in the third round (80th overall) by the Seattle Mariners in the 2001 draft and was given a $400,000 signing bonus. He was ranked the 38th best high school pick by Scout.com [1]

A catcher in high school, Abreu was used entirely as a DH in his short tour as a professional. Playing for the AZL Mariners in 2001 at the age of 19, he collected 3 hits in 8 at-bats for a .375 batting average, scoring 3 times and driving in 2 runs.

He voluntarily retired on April 29, 2003 after a bout with injuries.

Despite his very short professional career, he was a trigger for frustration in the autograph collecting community because he had a card in the 2001 Upper Deck Prospect Premieres baseball card set. Many people set out to get an autograph of every player in the set, however they were consistently stymied by both Abreu and another prospect whose career fizzled quickly - David Taylor. Those two had always been the most difficult players to track down. Both players were eventually located, with Abreu living in southern Florida.
