Biographical Information[edit]
Lazaro Gutierrez has been a minor league player and coach.
College[edit]
Gutierrez was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of high school. Going on to Miami for college, he had a 4.61 ERA in 17 games in 1996; the school finished second at the 1996 College World Series. In 1997, the southpaw had a 0-1, 7.50 record as the worst pitcher on the nation's #3 team. He fanned 32 in 30 innings but walked 22. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose him in the 16th round of the 1997 amateur draft. Returning for his senior season, Gutierrez improved to 4-1 with a save and a 4.75 ERA; he cut his walk rate (21 in 42 IP) while again fanning over a batter per inning. Miami again placed third nationally. The Detroit Tigers chose him in the 13th round of the 1998 amateur draft.
Professional playing career[edit]
Gutierrez was 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA for the 1998 Jamestown Jammers, then 2-1 with a save, a 4.66 ERA and 49 K in 46 1/3 innings for the West Michigan Whitecaps (walking 40). He signed with the San Diego Padres chain for 2001 and was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA for the Fort Wayne Wizards.
Coaching[edit]
Laz was a coach at Coral Gables High School from 2001-2003, then was pitching coach for Barry University from 2004-2006. In 2006, the Boston Red Sox hired him as an area scout. He was pitching coach for the 2007 Lowell Spinners and reprised that role in 2010; he was a scout throughout this period.
Gutierrez became head coach at Nova Southeastern University in 2020. After four years he returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2024.
