Kyle Funkhouser is a pitcher who was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the supplemental 1st round 2015 amateur draft but did not sign, but joined the Detroit Tigers organization after the following year's draft.
Born and raised in Illinois, Funkhouser attended Oak Forest High School. As a sophomore, he went 9-1 with 1.55 ERA and 65 strikeouts, and he followed that up with a 12-0 record, 0.83 ERA, and 142 strikeouts in his junior season. Despite going 11-2 with 0.65 ERA and 132 strikeouts as a senior, he went undrafted, and he opted to attend the University of Louisville.
As a freshman at Louisville, Funkhouser went 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 22 appearances, and he was 13-3 with a 1.94 ERA and 122 strikeouts in his second year at the school. After going 8-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 104 strikeouts as a junior in 2015, he was drafted in the 1st round by the Dodgers (the 35th overall pick, it was compensation for the loss of Hanley Ramirez to free agency), but he and the team could not come to terms before the signing deadline. In the 2016 amateur draft, he was taken in the 4th round by the Detroit Tigers after getting his degree in marketing at Louisville. He had gone 9-3, 3.86 as a senior. He did sign this time.
He began his pro career with the Connecticut Tigers in 2016, going 0-2, 2.65 in 13 games. In 2017, he went 5-2, 2.44 in 12 starts between the West Michigan Whitecaps and Lakeland Flying Tigers. In 2018, he was in both AA and AAA for the first time, combining to go 4-7, 3.96 between the Erie SeaWolves and Toledo Mud Hens. he pitched 97 2/3 innings in 19 games.
