Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Kolby Allard was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 2015 amateur draft with the 14th overall pick. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Braves, allowing just 1 hit and no runs while striking out 12 in 6 innings of work.

He was called up to Atlanta for the first time on July 31, 2018 after going 6-4, 2.80 in 18 starts for the Gwinnett Stripers of the International League. In his debut, he benefited from 19 hits from his teammates as the Braves beat the Miami Marlins, 11-6. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings. He only made 2 more appearances for the Braves that season, both in relief, and ended at 1-1, 12.38, pitching 8 innings. He only made 1 more start for Gwinnett before being shut down for the rest of the season. He started 2019 back with the Stripers and was 7-5, 4.17 after 20 starts when, on July 30th, he was traded to the Texas Rangers in return for reliever Chris Martin.

Allard pitched for the Rangers from 2019 to 2022, and while his first season was encouraging as he went 4-2, 4.96 in 9 starts, the next two were disastrous. Combined in 2020 and 2021, his record was 3-18, with an ERA of 5.25 in what was the equivalent of a full season. By 2020, he had become an afterthought for the Rangers, appearing in just 10 games, all in relief, and going 1-2, 7.29. He pitched somewhat better in AAA for the Round Rock Express that year, with a record of 3-3, 4.65 in 20 starts, in what were his first minor league games since 2019. On November 9th, he was traded back to the Braves, who still thought he could be turned into a winning major league pitcher, in return for veteran starter Jake Odorizzi.
