Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Kenny Grant played in the minor leagues from 1983 to 1988, beginning his professional career at 18 years old. He spent four full seasons—and part of a fifth—at Single-A, and spent the rest of his career at Low-A.

He was taken by the California Angels in the 10th round of the 1983 amateur draft and began his career that year. He proved himself to be quite fleet-footed, stealing 17 bags in his second campaign, then 26 his third, 20 his fourth and 20 his fifth. He finished his career with 93 swipes (though he was caught 74 times). Though he walked just 25 times to 83 strikeouts in his second season, he soon developed an effective eye at the plate, drawing 101 walks in 1986 and 107 in 1987, while striking out 89 and 85 times, respectively. He led the Midwest League in walks in 1986 (beating #2 Keith Bennett by 12) and the California League in that category in 1987 (beating #2 Jeff Manto by 5).

He was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the Double-A round of the 1988 Rule V Draft.

Overall, Grant hit .253/.367/.355 with 30 home runs, 286 RBI, 382 walks and 467 strikeouts in 628 games.
