Biographical Information[edit]

When pitcher Keaton Winn was first called up by the San Francisco Giants to join the team in St. Louis, MO on June 12, 2023, it was the first time he had been to a major league stadium. Hailing from a small town in Iowa and having been drafted out of a community college in the state, he never had the chance to attend a major league game growing up - and had never been to one either after turning pro. St. Louis was actually the closest major league city to his home town of Ollie, IA, population 200, a four-hour drive away.

In his major league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals the day after his call-up, he pitched the final four innings of an 11-3 win to earn a save. While this is normally a relatively rare occurrence for a pitcher making his debut, it came exactly one day after Ricky Karcher had done the same thing with the Cincinnati Reds, although in Karcher's case, the degree of difficulty had been greater as he had had to preserve a one-run lead in extra innings.
