Biographical Information

Infielder Kean Wong was the MVP of the 2017 Triple-A Baseball National Championship, leading the Durham Bulls to a 5-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds.

The younger brother of Kolten Wong, he was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 4th round of the 2013 amateur draft. he began his career that year with the GCL Rays, hitting .328 in 46 games. In 2014, he hit .306/.347/.370 in 106 games for the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League. In 2015, with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League, he hit .274/.319/.332 in 103 games, with 46 runs and 15 stolen bases. In 2016, he moved up to the AA Montgomery Biscuits, where he played 116 games and hit .276/.323/.369. At all four stops, he had been younger than the average player, and in fact was getting younger compared to the average every year, as he moved steaily up the minor league rungs.

In 2017, he split his year between Montgomery and Durham, getting his first taste of AAA ball. He continued to be a productive hitter, hitting .261/.322/.348 in 117 games, with 22 doubles and 5 homers. The Bulls won the International League championship that year, and he took a star turn at the AAA championship game against the Pacific Coast League champions on September 19th, as he went 3 for 4, hitting a grand slam and falling a triple shy of the cycle to lead Durham to a win. He was named the game's MVP as a result.
