Biographical Information[edit]
Katsumi Manabe was a minor league pitcher who later worked as an umpire in Japan.
Manabe was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers in the 6th round in 1986 out of high school. He played in ni-gun in 1987 and from 1989-1991, never making it to Nippon Pro Baseball. Hanshin farmed him out to the US in 1988 and he went 2-8 with a 5.75 ERA for the Fresno Suns. Hanshin moved him to the outfield later in his career.
After he failed to make it to NPB as a player, Manabe became an umpire and reached the big time in 1994. He worked the 2002 Japan Series, 2005 Japan Series, 2006 Japan Series, 2008 Japan Series, 2009 Japan Series, 2011 Japan Series and 2015 Japan Series. He also worked the NPB All-Star Game in 2001, 2005, 2010 and 2017 as well as the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
