biographical Information[edit]

Katsuki Akagawa is a pitcher. He was a national All-Star in high school, then was picked in the first round by the Yakult Swallows in the 2008 NPB draft. He debuted in 2009, making one appearance on September 9. He allowed a walk, three hits (including a homer) and three runs while throwing two wild pitches and retiring none. He also pitched one game in 2010, giving up four runs, seven hits and three walks in 5 1/3 IP. He then joined the Japanese national team for the 2010 Intercontinental Cup, losing to Italy's Cody Cillo and relieving against South Korea; he had a 3.18 ERA for the event. Akagawa broke out in 2011, recorded a 2.03 ERA in 23 appearances, and collected 6 wins in 13 starts. He was selected into the 2012 NPB All-Star Game, appeared in Game 3 and pitched 3 hitless innings. He ended up 8-9 with a 3.97 ERA in the 2012 season. However, he slumped to 6.98 ERA in 2013, and struggled in 2014 as his ERA rose to 7.45 in 14 appearances. His ERA was a terrible 7.16 even in the NPB Farm Leagues, and he stayed there for the entire 2015 season. Akagawa announced his retirement after that season.

Overall, Akagawa was 14-20 with a 4.17 ERA, struck out 202 and pitched 319 2/3 innings in 6 seasons in NPB.
