Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Karl Steffen played 2 years in the New York Yankees' organization (1978-1979) and one in the Detroit Tigers' chain (1980). The Yankees took him in the 19th round of the 1978 amateur draft, a few rounds before Howard Johnson. He was 6-2 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.03 WHIP for the Oneonta Yankees that summer. He was 5th in the New York-Penn League in ERA, between Mark Parker and Steven Gibson. He split 1979 between Oneonta (5-7, 4.85) and the Fort Lauderdale Yankees (0-1, 7.71 in 2 G). He tied for 4th in the NYPL in losses, tied for 9th with 4 complete games and was 3rd with 80 K, two behind leaders Bryan Hardy and Bill Sattler. He had a 4-8, 4.55 record for the 1980 Montgomery Rebels.

Steffen spent 34 years as head coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, compiling a 852-470-3 record from 1985 to 2018. He took the school to the 1996 Division III College World Series and 2002 Division III College World Series. Steffen became an assistant coach at Russell Sage College in 2022.
