Biographical Information

Kai-young Choi was an Olympic outfielder who later played 8 years professionally.

Choi played for the South Korean national team in the 1984 Amateur World Series, 1984 Olympics and 1985 Intercontinental Cup (Silver Medal). In the 1984 Amateur World Series, he was only 1 for 26 with a walk and a steal as the starting South Korean center fielder (he had 14 putouts, one assist and no errors). He turned pro in 1986 with the Lotte Giants, hitting .230/.299/.295 in 71 plate appearances over 66 games. He hit .302/.394/.384 in 1987. In 1988, he batted .214/.305/.298 while stealing 14 bases in 26 tries. He had a career-high 29 RBI. He produced at a .241/.342/.291 clip in 1989, stealing 15 bases in 23 tries and scoring a career-best 45 runs.

In 1990, he hit .263/.350/.353 with 12 steals in 18 attempts and legging out 7 triples. He was second to Deok-kyu Yun in three-baggers in the KBO. He slumped to .240/.323/.308 in reduced action in 1991 then hit .290/.338/.348 in 76 plate appearances in 1992 and .182/.247/.303 in 74 plate appearances in 1993, finishing up back on the bench. Overall, he had hit .252/.338/.328 in the KBO with 57 steals in 90 attempts.
