Biographical Information

Pitcher Justin Hancock began his professional career in 2011 and reached the majors in 2018.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 9th round of the 2011 amateur draft and signed for a bonus of $100,000. After a rough year to begin his career, Hancock posted a 3.30 ERA in 28 games (16 starts) between the Eugene Emeralds and Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2012. In 2013, he was 8-8 with a 3.38 mark in 26 starts between Fort Wayne and the Lake Elsinore Storm. He went 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) for the AZL Padres and San Antonio Missions in 2014.

Hancock reached AAA for the first time in 2015, when he split his season between San Antonio and the El Paso Chihuahuas of the Pacific Coast League. He went 8-6, 3.51, in 24 games, all starts, 22 of them for San Antonio. In 130 2/3 innings, he allowed 142 hits and 53 walks, against 97 Ks, so there was a lot of circulation on the bases even if his ERA was good. Injuries then limited him to only 2 starts for El Paso in 2016, and he started 2017 back in San Antonio, but as a reliever this time. He was 0-2, 6.23 after 10 games when on May 8th he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in return for OF Matt Szczur.

Hancock made his major league debut with the Cubs on May 9, 2018, giving up 2 run in 1 2/3 innings of relief in a 13-4 win over the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field. he took over for starter José Quintana in the top of the 7th with a 12-1 lead and gave up a two-run homer to Miguel Rojas with two outs, then was replaced by Mike Montgomery with two outs in the 8th. He spent 2019 with the [Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters]] before retiring.

Hancock became ana ssistant coach at Indiana State University in 2022.
