Biographical Information

Louis "Jumbo" Schoeneck, a big man for the times, was a star in the Union Association and later in the decade played a couple of years in the National League.

He had played for Springfield in the Northwestern League in 1883.

His 1884 season split between two teams, Schoeneck posted a batting average, OBP and SLG that were all in the top ten in the Union Association. Later, when he came back to the majors to play in 1888 and 1889 with the Indianapolis Hoosiers his stats were not as impressive. Bill James in his New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract mentions Shoeneck in his essay about the Union Association not being as high-quality a league as other major leagues.

The Sporting Life of February 13, 1889 referred to him as "Big Lew Schoeneck".

His baseball cards definitely make him look like a large man - similar, perhaps to his contemporary Dave Orr although Orr was shorter.
