The brother of Omar Linares and son of Fidel Linares, outfielder/1B Juan Carlos Linares was a longtime player in Cuba. He is unrelated to a player with an identical name, Juan Carlos Linares Izquierdo, who debuted when this Linares was winding down.

Juan Carlos Linares led the 1993 Selective Series with 64 hits and 16 doubles. He joined the Cuban national team for the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games, going 1 for 3. In the 1994 Selective Series, Linares won the batting title (.429) and led in hits (70) and RBI (42). He was 1 for 8 with two runs and a RBI when Cuba won the 1994 Baseball World Cup, backing up Ermidelio Urrutia in right and José Estrada in center. He led the 1997 Copa de la Revolucion with 46 hits. In the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, Linares was one for two with a double, a run and 2 RBI as a substitute for DH Antonio Pacheco and a pinch-runner.

In the 2002 Super Liga, Linares had 35 hits to tie Frederich Cepeda for the lead.

Over his five final Serie Nacional for Pinar del Rio, Linares hit .338/.439/.484 in 2000-2001, .344/.439/.521 in 2001-2002, .300/.408/.416 in 2002-2003, .309/.422/.401 in 2003-2004 and .320/.466/.433 in 2004-2005.

After retiring, Linares coached in Nicaragua.
