Biographical Information[edit]

Juan Avena was drafted but did not play in the pro ranks; he was on the Mexican national team.

He hit .464 as a school senior. The New York Mets took him in the 37th round of the 2013 amateur draft out of junior college, but he did not sign. He hit .245/.302/.340 his last season at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He then was with Mexico's squad for the 2015 Premier 12; due to political fighting between the Mexican baseball federation and the Mexican League, the team had to rely almost entirely on Mexican-American players, including some with MLB experience. A backup first baseman and corner outfielder, he went 1 for 5, his lone hit being a double off Team USA's Zack Segovia. He started the Bronze Medal Game against Japan and was retired by Tomoyuki Sugano and Shota Takeda in a loss. He has also coached for the Urban Youth Academy.
