Biographical Information[edit]

Juan Agosto was a solid relief pitcher in the major leagues for many years, appearing in 543 games (2 starts) in a 12-year career.

Debuting late in the 1981 season, Juan spent much of his early days with the Chicago White Sox, earning the nickname "Juan Disgusto: The Master of Disaster". He made his first career start on June 6, 1986 following a scenery change, now a member of the Minnesota Twins. Facing the Kansas City Royals, he pitched just 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 1. The Twins lost, 6-1. His second start came on July 11, 1992 as a member of the Seattle Mariners against the New York Yankees. It was also unsuccessful; he went 2 and 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, no walks and striking out 1. The Mariners did win the game, 5-3.

Agosto led the major leagues in 1988 with a ten-game winning streak, finishing the year 10-2 overall. The ten-game winning streak was also the longest in Houston Astros franchise history at the time. He led the National League with 82 appearances in 1990 and was rewarded with a three year, $4.6 million contract from the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason. He was never able to match his Houston production and was released in 1992, finishing his career back with the Astros in 1993. In his career, he primarily wore number 49. Agosto had 20 at bats in his career, getting 2 hits and 1 walk. His first hit was on July 19, 1989 as a member of the Astros against the Philadelphia Phillies. The pitcher was Don Carman. His other hit was on August 28, 1991 as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. The pitcher was Bruce Hurst of the San Diego Padres. Both of Agosto's hits were against left-handed pitchers, despite being a lefty hitter.
