Biographical Information

"With two Burns to count upon the Reds ought to be able to warm up some of the other fellows." - Sporting Life's quip about the 1910 Reds having both Joe Burns and Bill Burns on the team

Joe Burns played five games in the big leagues, hitting .429/.529/.429 in 14 at bats. He played one game with the 1910 Cincinnati Reds, finishing a 1.000 National League hitter by singling off Hall of Famer Mordecai Brown. He played 13 games in left field with the 1913 Detroit Tigers, a position that would be seized firmly by Bobby Veach for nearly the next decade. In his final big league game, Joe faced another Hall of Famer, in Herb Pennock, and, batting fifth between Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb, went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Joe enjoyed a long minor league career, including (among other teams) five years with the Portland Duffs, three years with the Reading team (which had a different name each year), and three years with the Buffalo Bisons. He lived to be 98 years old.
