Biographical Information[edit]
José Pulido pitched for the Spanish national team in at least a half-dozen major competitions.
Pulido was with Spain as a teenager in the 1988 Baseball World Cup, allowing 13 hits in 24 at-bats and walking five in 4 1/3 IP. He allowed nine runs and had the third-highest ERA on the Spanish staff. He helped Spain take the Bronze at the 1989 European Championship. In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, opponents were 5 for 12 and Pulido gave up four runs in 2 2/3 IP as the least-used Spanish hurler.
Pulido made three appearances in the 1992 Olympics, with a 14.85 ERA for the host country; he tied for Spain's third-worst ERA. He was much better in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup, serving as Spain's ace, going 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and a team-high six whiffs, though he did walk eight in 14 2/3 IP. He also was 0 for 2 as a backup third baseman. His win came against Australia, which would win the event later in the decade.
During the 1993 European Championship, he was 1-0 with a 0.93 ERA. He had the best K:BB ratio in the event (8:1; Geoffry Kohl was second at 7:1), was 9th in opponent OBP (between Magnus Höglund and Mikael Aho) and ranked third in ERA (after Eelco Jansen and Rubén Garcia). In the 1995 European Championship, the Bilbao native surrendered 17 hits and 13 runs in 9 innings, going 0-1. Only young Manny Olivera, a future AA pitcher, had a worse ERA for Spain.
