José Matos (Venezuela)

José Matos hit .342/~.457/.421 for the Venezuelan national team that won Silver in the 1953 Amateur World Series; he was 8th in average, right behind Luis Aparicio. [1] In the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games, he batted .455/~.500/.636 with 9 runs in 6 games as Venezuela won their first baseball Gold in a Central American and Caribbean Games. He played a critical role as he led the Games in average (.011 ahead of #2 Carlos Duarte), tied for second in hits (one behind Dario Rubenstein), was 5th in slugging, tied for the most runs (with Rubenstein, Alfredo Ríos and Eladio Reverón) and was second among first basemen with 61 putouts. He won Bronze in the 1955 Pan American Games; his four doubles tied Jim Temp and Fabio Fiallo for the lead. [3]
