Biographical Information[edit]
Jose Mateo pitched for the Puerto Rican national team a couple times, including in the Olympics.
Mateo was the most-used hurler for Puerto Rico in the 1992 Olympics; he led with 4 games pitched and tied Jesus Feliciano for the most innings (12 1/3). He struck out 12 to lead the staff, 3 ahead of Feliciano, but also led with 11 walks (6 more than Feliciano or Orlando López. He had a 5.84 ERA, tying Feliciano for 3rd on the team. He saved Wilfredo Vélez's 2-0 win over Italy with a shutout 9th, but did not fare as well trying to close out against host Spain. He relieved James Figueroa in the 9th with Spain already mounting a comeback. He allowed two walks and a hit (to Miguel Pariente) while retiring only one; he was not charged with a run as all runners who scored were inherited as Spain pulled off a 7-6 upset win. He tied Xavier Camps and Chien-Fu Kuo Lee for 6th in the Barcelona Games in pitching appearances.
Mateo helped Puerto Rico to a Bronze Medal in the 1995 Pan American Games.
