José Rodríguez (rodrijo09)
José Augusto Rodríguez
- Born May 13, 2001 in Esperanza, Valverde D.R.
Biographical Information[edit]
José Rodriguez played one game with the Chicago White Sox on June 20, 2023. He entered the game as a pinch-runner for C yasmani Grandal, scored a run, and stayed to play second base for the final inning of a 7-6 win over the Texas Rangers.
The White Sox signed him as an international amateur free agent on February 13, 2018 and he played in their minor league system starting that season, sitting out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He hit .361 in 29 games for the Winston-Salem Dash in 2021, allowing him to reach AA at just 20. He made it to AAA two years later with the Charlotte Knights, shortly before his big league debut, and hit .262 with 21 homers in 106 games between Charlotte and the AA Birmingham Barons that year. However, his inability to draw walks was an issue, as his OBP was just .292 in spite of a decent batting average.
He was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies at the end of spring training in 2024 and was assigned to the AA Reading Fightin Phils to start the year. He was hitting .265 in 38 games when on June 4th he was issued a one-year suspension by Major League Baseball as part of an investigation into violations of its policy on gambling, an investigation that led to a lifetime ban for Tucupita Marcano, and one-year suspensions to three others in a situation similar to José's. In his case, betting data showed that he placed 28 MLB-related bets and three college baseball bets as a minor leaguer in the Chicago White Sox system in 2021 and 2022.
