Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jose Ortega reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 2012.
Signed by Tigers scout German Robles in 2006, Ortega made his pro debut the following year in the Venezuelan Summer League. With the VSL Tigers in 2008, he posted a 2.20 ERA and 5 saves in 23 outings. After pitching for the Oneonta Tigers in 2009, he split the next summer between three different clubs. He missed the start of the 2011 campaign with an injury but came back to spend the remainder of the year with the Toledo Mud Hens.
Back with Toledo to start 2012, Ortega was called up by Detroit in early June. He made his big league debut on June 8th, facing the Cincinnati Reds. He entered the game with one out in the bottom of the eighth and allowed an RBI-single to Todd Frazier, the first batter he faced. He then retired Zack Cozart and allowed a single to Chris Heisey before being replaced by Phil Coke. He was returned to the Mud Hens the following day.
