Biographical Information

José Báez pitched for 20 seasons in Cuba.

Báez was with Las Tunas in 1988-1989 when he led the Cuban Serie Nacional with 16 starts. In 1992-1993, he led in innings pitched (153 1/3) and complete games (13). He tossed three shutouts in 1993-1994 to tie Liván Hernández, Ariel Prieto, Pedro Luis Lazo and José R. Riscart for the league lead.

On November 17, 1998, the veteran twirled a no-hitter against the Metropolitanos. He hit a league-worst 17 batters in 1999-2000. He retired around 2004 with a career record of 143-172 with 55 saves and a 4.51 ERA in 541 games. He had completed 119 of 283 starts.

As of 2010, he ranks among Cuba's all-time leaders (post-1962) in numerous categories: hits allowed (2,696, 7th), batters faced (10,929, 8th, between Ormari Romero and Faustino Corrales), runs allowed (1,443, tied for third with Misael López), earned runs allowed (1,236, third behind Carlos Yánes and Gervasio Miguel), walks (854, 12th), intentional walks (90, 3rd), doubles allowed (449, 3rd), games pitched (541, 2nd to Yánes), losses (3rd behind Carlos Yánes and Miguel), saves (55, 8th) and innings (2,467, 11th). He never appeared for the Cuban national team in a major event.
