Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jonathan Cannon was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 3rd round of the 2022 amateur draft out of the University of Georgia. He spent two seasons as a starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, going a combined 13-6 in 25 starts; in the pandemic-interrupted 2020 season, he had been used in 5 games as a reliever, going 3-0, before the season was abruptly stopped.
He made his pro debut in 2022 with the ACL White Sox, then after one game was promoted to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (ironically) of the Carolina League. He only pitched 7 1/3 innings between the two stops, as the Sox did not want to overuse him after a full college season. In 2023, he started off with the Winston-Salem Dash of the South Atlantic League, where he went 5-2, 3.59 in 14 starts. He earned a berth on the American League squad at the 2023 Futures Game, then was promoted to the Birmingham Barons of the AA Southern League. He made another 11 starts there, going 1-4, 5.77. His overall numbers were a record of 6-6, 4.46 in 25 games - all starts - with 106 strikeouts in 121 innings.
He started the 2024 in AAA for the first time, with the Charlotte Knights, but with the parent White Sox off to a horrendous start, he was called up to the majors in short order. He was 0-0, 2.79 in 2 starts when he got the call to the Show and made his debut for the Pale Hose on April 17th, starting against the Kansas City Royals. He did quite well, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings and left with a 2-1 lead, but his bullpen managed to blow it in the final two innings, coughing up 3 runs, and Chicago lost the game, 4-2.
