Johnny Vergez later coached the Saint Mary's College of California.
Record[edit]
Vergez is the only player ever to hit the first 20 home runs of his career at the same ballpark. His first 27 were all at the Polo Grounds. Next in this category are Burgess Whitehead (17), Bill Rigney (16), Freddie Fitzsimmons (14), Andy Cohen (13), Ryan Theriot (12). All but Theriot were also at the Polo Grounds.
