Biographical Information

John Rigney was one of the Chicago White Sox top pitchers in the years prior to World War II. He was the winning pitcher in the first night game at Comiskey Park on August 14, 1939, and went on to win 15 games that year. On June 20th of the following year, he pitched an 11 inning shutout against the New York Yankees, and he posted 14 victories and a 3.11 ERA on the season. He won 13 games in 1941 and that same year married Dorothy Comiskey, daughter of team owner Grace Comiskey. The next season, he was 3-3 when he enlisted in the Navy in May 1942.

After being discharged from the Navy in October 1945, Rigney returned to the Sox, but his playing time was limited by arm injuries. He retired after the 1947 season and took a position in the Sox front office. He later served as the club's General Manager from 1956 to 1958.

Rigney's brother, Tom Rigney, was business manager of the Waterloo White Hawks in 1948 [1].
