Johnnie McKenzie Shives umpired in the North Carolina State League, Piedmont League, Western Carolina League and Carolina League over a period of 19 1/2 years, starting in 1943. He was inducted into the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame in 2008 in a class with Vince Coleman, Buddy Bell, Bing Devine and Matt Winters.
