Biographical Information[edit]

John Eugene Sullivan was in the major leagues during two seasons. He was with the 1905 Detroit Tigers and played in 13 games, making his major league debut a few months before Ty Cobb also did so on the same team and in the same season. He came back for one game with the 1908 Pittsburgh Pirates, where he was one year older than teammate Honus Wagner.

John was born in Chicago, IL in 1873 and was apparently 27 years old before he started minor league ball. During most of 1900, he played for the Denver Grizzlies and hit .329. He came to the Tigers at age 32 in 1905 after playing two seasons for the St. Paul Saints, and also played most of 1905 with St. Paul as well. He was with the Kansas City Blues for part or all of each season during 1906-10.

According to the Nov/Dec 2012 edition of the SABR Biographical Research Committee Newsletter, John Sullivan is buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, in Evanston, IL.

There have been five major leaguers, through 2019, named John Sullivan. This one is the earliest of the five.
