Biographical Information[edit]
John Stedronsky played four games at third base near the end of the 1879 season for the Chicago White Stockings. He was close to being the oldest player on the team.
He is one of the few major leaguers from what later became Czechoslovakia, although it was part of the Austrian Empire at the time of his birth.
The SABR Biographical Research Committee newsletter for November/December 2006 reported on the efforts to track down his history. It appears there were two men with the name John Stedronsky, of approximately the same age, who came from Bohemia to settle in Cleveland, OH. Many facets of their lives were similar, even to the point of having wives named Mary and dying the same year. The ballplayer was finally tracked down - he had previously played for an amateur team in Cleveland and for the Cleveland Forest City team. In 1886 he played for the factory team of an iron foundry, and later was a saloon keeper (as was the other John Stedronsky).
